Skip hire alternative

The hidden work of hiring a skip

Hiring a skip looks simple: order it, fill it, have it collected. In practice, there is more to it. You need somewhere to put it. If it has to go on the road, the skip company needs a permit from the highway authority, which adds cost and lead time, and the skip may need lights and cones. Then you have to fill it yourself, carrying everything out of the house or garden and lifting it over the side.

There are also rules on what can go in. Fridges, sofas, mattresses, plasterboard, tyres and electricals often cannot go in a general skip or cost extra. And while it sits on your drive, neighbours and passers-by sometimes add their own rubbish.

How a man-and-van clearance compares

With A Star, you send photos, we give you a price, and on the agreed day our team loads everything into the van ourselves. We collect from wherever the waste is, including lofts, garages, upstairs rooms and back gardens, and we sweep up afterwards. The job is usually finished in an hour or two.

You pay for the waste we take, and the labour is included. There is no permit, no waiting for collection and no risk of other people filling your skip. We can also take the items a skip will not, including fridges, sofas, mattresses and separated plasterboard, with each one going to the right facility.

Skip permits and the highway

In West Sussex, a skip placed on the road or pavement needs a permit from West Sussex County Council as the highway authority, arranged by the skip company. In Brighton and Hove, permits are issued by Brighton & Hove City Council. Permits take time to arrange, add cost, and come with conditions on lighting, cones and how long the skip can stay.

A van collection does not need a permit because nothing is left on the highway. We park legally while we load and leave as soon as the job is done.

Being honest

When a skip still makes sense

We will be honest: a skip can be the better choice for a long building project where waste is produced steadily over several weeks, and you have space on your own drive. In that situation, being able to throw waste in as you go is useful.

For most household clear-outs, garden clearances, garage and loft clearances, and end-of-project collections, a single visit from us is quicker, simpler and often cheaper. Several of our customers have told us exactly that in their reviews.

I chose A Star waste management as I was very pleased with the service provided previously they removed a lot of household rubbish for me quote was very reasonable and affordable nice guys came today for garden waste again good service will definitely use them again highly recommend THANKYOU

What our customers say

Alan, who arranged his collection on WhatsApp, said it was much cheaper than getting a skip and loading it yourself. Another customer said our very reasonable price saved them paying more for a skip. We cannot promise that for every job, but it is a common experience.

If you are unsure which option suits you best, send us photos and ask. We will give you a straight answer.

Questions

Skip alternative FAQs

Can't see your question? Call 01903 962 492 or message us on WhatsApp.

Is a clearance cheaper than a skip?

Often, for household clear-outs, because the labour is included and there is no permit. For long building projects, a skip may be better value.

Do I need a permit for your van?

No. We park legally while we load, then leave.

Can you take things a skip cannot?

Yes, including fridges, sofas, mattresses and separated plasterboard.

How much waste can you take?

As much as you have. Large jobs may need more than one van load.

Can you come back for more later?

Yes. Many builders book regular collections instead of a skip.

How do I get a price?

Send a few photos of the waste and the route to the road on WhatsApp to 07376 429757, or call 01903 962 492. We reply with a clear, fixed quote.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. A Star Waste Management is a licensed waste carrier and fully insured. All waste goes to authorised facilities.

Do you recycle?

Yes. We separate metal, timber, cardboard, green waste and electricals as we load, and set aside reusable items wherever possible.

What are your opening hours?

Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. You can send WhatsApp photos any time and we will reply during office hours.

Send us a photo. We'll send you a price.

WhatsApp a few pictures of what needs to go and the route to the road. We reply with a clear, fixed quote, usually the same working day, and collections are often possible within a day or two.
