The detail
Why fridges need special handling
Older fridges and freezers can contain CFCs or HCFCs, and newer ones contain HFCs or hydrocarbons, both in the cooling circuit and in the insulating foam inside the walls. Specialist treatment plants degas the circuit and process the foam in sealed conditions so that these gases are captured rather than released.
Because of that extra treatment, fridges and freezers cost more to dispose of than general waste. It is also why it is worth using a licensed carrier: a fridge that ends up dumped or stripped for scrap can leak gases and oil into the environment.
Getting it out of the house
Fridges and American-style fridge-freezers are heavy, awkward and easy to damage walls and floors with. We bring enough people to carry them safely, take doors off where necessary to get through tight spaces, and protect floors on the way out.
