The detail
Since the end of 2022, the Environment Agency has required waste upholstered domestic seating, such as sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, upholstered stools and office chairs, to be treated as containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs). These chemicals were used in older flame retardants and foams, and they must be destroyed rather than landfilled or recycled with other waste.
In practice, that means sofas and armchairs are kept separate from other waste and sent for incineration at permitted facilities. It is one reason sofa disposal costs more than it used to, and why you should be cautious of anyone offering to take a sofa away very cheaply.
Furniture that came in flat-packed often will not come out in one piece, and some sofas were delivered before a staircase was changed. We dismantle wardrobes, beds, bunk beds, desks and shelving as needed, and we carry sofas down stairs and through tight doorways without damaging walls or banisters.
